“Driving” is a common Japanese response to the question “What is your hobby?” Owning a car in Japan is an expensive privilege and authorities take automotive matters quite seriously. In fact, drivers are required to display a “mark” from their car during the first year after earning their license and after they turn seventy years of age. These stickers are intended to warn other drivers that these inexperienced or elderly drivers may not be very skilled. The elderly mark is dark yellow and orange and called the kareha, which means, “dying leaves”, while the beginner mark is bright yellow and green and called wakaba, “young leaves.” Imagine seeing old people driving around Florida with a sticker on their bumper that implies, “I’m senile, can’t hear, and will die soon. Beware!”
